Comparing Small Business Bookkeeping Software Options

If you are considering a serious alternative to Quickbooks, check out this article by David Matthew, comparing Intuit Quickbooks to Sage Peachtree. Peachtree small business bookkeeping software is the distant runner-up competitor to Quickbooks, but Peachtree has been around since the beginning. In fact Peachtree was the first bookkeeping software I ever used, back in the late 80’s, helping with my mom’s nursery school finances, using a Commodore 64...yep.

David's article breaks out side by side feature comparisons and explore Peachtree's unique options such as a customizable tool set and preset email alerts. Each option has different areas where they really shine. Check it out [here].

So the things I see here right off the bat as someone who is a bookkeeper are three fold.

One is check signing - while it looks to be cool, if you're beyond the stage of doing your books yourself many folks want to know and sign checks as they go out the door and having automatic checking signing reduces that security/double checking.

Two is support. THe vast majority of professionals i know (both entrepreneurs and bookkeepers/accountants use QuickBooks so it can be harder to find a solid professional or even the kind of anecdotal support that is shared with QBs and with starting a small business you have so many things to worry it about, I don't think (in this case and I think this is a rare thing for me to say) that using the less popular software is worth it.

Three is online possibilities. Using QBs online is a great option for small business owners. It is more expensive (monthly fee) but you get 3 users up front plus an accountant user and you can access it from any browser. So if you're traveling and want to check it from that internet cafe in Europe or Delaware, you're good.

Just thought I'd give you another viewpoint.
